The WISP Team received very exciting news in December that it had been shortlisted as finalist in the Cities/regions category of The Circular Economy Awards 2015. This is very exciting news for the programme as it was selected among 200 entries from around the world! The Circular Economy Awards recognise individuals and enterprises from commerce, civil society and academia who have made a notable contribution to driving circular economy principles. The award ceremony for the category winners will be held at the World Econoic Forum in Davos on 20 January 2015. The Cities/Regions category will honour the city or region which best enables an environment for the circular economy to develop and flourish.   WISP's award entry was submitted based on the programme's successful pilot year in 2013-2014 as well as two "world first" innovations that enabled the programme's early success and momentum: Designing the programme to ensure that high level government buy-in was established, resulting in strong support and promotion; and Setting up the programme and database platform for national scalability, resulting in rapid regional expansion and leveraging additional funding. ...

The Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP) is one of several initiatives funded by the Western Cape Government’s Green Economy Initiative. WISP was initiated to address challenges faced by businesses such as rising raw material and electricity prices, and the need for the province to become more resource efficient and reduce its carbon intensity. WISP is a free facilitation service that uses industrial symbiosis to enhance business profitability and sustainability by connecting companies so that one company’s under-utilised or residual resources (materials, energy, water, assets, logistics and expertise) can be used by another company. WISP is delivered by GreenCape, a Sector Development Agency for the Green Economy established by the Western Cape Government in 2010. Since the commencement of the programme, the WISP Team has successfully grown an industrial symbiosis network of more than 150 companies across a diverse range of industries. ...
