The City of Cape Town (CoCT) has begun phase three of their innovative Home Composting Programme, providing free home composting containers to encourage residents to start composting at home. Instead of throwing away household organic waste, including fruit and vegetable waste, eggshells, tea bags, leaves, etc. it can be used to generate compost for gardens.
In April 2016, the CoCT embarked on a phased initiative to provide free home composting containers to residents. The aim of this initiative is to help residents deal with their organic household waste, create a good compost system and reduce organics going to landfill. Good compost feeds nutrients back into soil, which helps if one is trying to grow their own food or establish a healthy garden.
In the first phase of the programme the CoCT issued more than 5 000 free home composting containers. The second phase, from February to June 2017, ensured that around 5 100 more residents received a free composting container, specifically in suburbs such as Mitchells Plain, Khayelitsha, Philippi, Manenberg, Gugulethu, Kuils River and Delft, among others.
Phase three of the programme kicks off during November 2017, in Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain. It will extend to Atlantis, Kensington and Strand, among others, during 2018. Residents with qualifying properties will once again be invited to apply for and collect their home composting containers at nearby collection venues, on specific dates and at specific times.
