Home 5 News 5 United Nations Industrial Development Organisation requests proposals for the development of Waste-to-Energy projects

23 January 2018

The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), in collaboration with the Government of South Africa through the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) and private sector partners, is implementing a Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded project that promotes the conversion of organic waste from agro-industries to energy: Under this initiative, UNIDO is requesting proposals (RFP) from companies, consortium of companies and/or project developers for joint development of Waste-to-Energy (WtE) projects with a focus on small, to medium size anaerobic digestion biogas plants.

Project Background: The project seeks to promote market based adoption of integrated biogas technologies in small, medium and micro scale enterprises (SMMEs) in South Africa in line with the country’s policies to promote the development of the renewable energy sector and the green economy drive. The project intends to achieve this by supporting selected SMMEs with grant funding assistance for the development of demonstration projects employing integrated biogas technologies to deploy at least 3 Megawatts (MW) on the ground and to increase investment further to at least 6MW installed.
