GreenCape has been working with companies to showcase examples of alternative and reduced water use in their respective business sectors

The Shoprite Group of Companies (Shoprite) is a major retailer operating throughout the African continent. Shoprite has 261 stores, 8 distribution centres and 3 offices in the Western Cape, with its headquarters in Cape Town. In response to the unprecedented Western Cape drought, Shoprite developed a water crisis plan in order to maintain operations under water-scarce conditions.

In 2018, having already installed water storage tanks, incentivised staff to reduce water consumption and suspended on-site irrigation, Shoprite developed a water crisis plan which resulted in reduced water use intensity (l/m2) by 8.7% between July 2018 – June 2019.
