Key regulatory considerations for developing BSF projects in SA can now be determined by accessing GreenCape’s latest industry brief.
Black Soldier Fly (BSF) are being embraced as a higher value solution for processing organic and food waste when compared with other traditional circular economy alternatives (for example, composting).
A circular economy maximises the value of products, components, and materials for as long as possible. This includes the nutrients embedded in animal feed and human food.
By integrating modern technology, innovators are leveraging the insatiable appetite of the BSF larvae to upcycle low-value organic waste into high-value products featuring a wide array of applications, notably in animal feed and pet food, but also crop production and healthy soils.
For companies to fully capitalise on this opportunity, compliance with regulatory requirements is essential. While certain regulations apply broadly to all developments and not just BSF related activities, a number are specifically relevant to BSF operations and encompass key areas such as waste treatment, animal feed production, fertilisers, biostimulants, land use, and air quality.
Accordingly, with support from the Anglo American Foundation, GreenCape has published an industry brief which outlines key regulatory considerations for developing BSF projects in SA. Additionally, GreenCape has developed a suite of other BSF knowledge products that delve into various aspects of BSF agriculture in the South African context.
