In nascent industries, start-up business owners generally prioritise daily operations over sector formalisation. During these early stages, a unified industry voice is however critical to advocate for shared interests and navigate complex regulatory landscapes. Embracing risk as a prerequisite for progress, GreenCape have documented the journey of establishing the Southern African Mass Insect Rearing Organisation (SAMIRO), with the support of AAF, to provide a roadmap for other sunrise industries. This “BSF Model” of catalytic support towards formalising an industry is now ready to be applied to other emerging South African green sectors, for example:Textile recycling, solar PV recycling, electric vehicles, battery energy storage and hemp.
