History

In June 2018 Minister of Trade and Industry, Rob Davies, confirmed the designation of the Atlantis Special Economic Zone (ASEZ) and the approval of cabinet in writing to Western Cape Minister of Economic Opportunities, Alan Winde. The designation sees the entire Atlantis Industrial area being declared a Special Greentech Economic Zone.

Situated on the West Coast of South Africa, 40kms from Cape Town, the Atlantis SEZ capitalises on the province’s already booming renewable energy and green technology sector. It supports the manufacturing sectors to become suppliers and component manufacturers for the renewable energy sector, in particular independent power producers in the government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Programme (REIPPP).

The SEZ has already attracted investments of R680 million.

Gestamp Renewable Industries, a Spanish wind tower manufacturer has invested R475 million.

GreenCape is the appointed Atlantic SEZ project management unit, responsible for coordinating the application for designation.
