GreenCape, in partnership with the City of Cape Town, has publish a new industry brief titled “Electric-vehicles-as-a-service – A viable fleet transition model in South Africa”

The South African electric vehicles (EV) market remains nascent with overall low penetration levels. The main barriers limiting market growth remain the high upfront capital cost of EVs, limited public charging infrastructure and, more recently, grid instability (due to loadshedding).

Within this nascent market, the electrification of centrally managed fleets presents a unique market opportunity in the EV transition. The electrification of light delivery vehicles (LDVs) represents the second largest market opportunity in South Africa after the private passenger vehicle market.

The industry brief highlights:

  • The market size for LDVs.
  • The demand to transition these fleets to EVs to save costs, improve efficiencies and reduce carbon emissions.
    and reduce carbon emissions.
  • The market barriers of transitioning from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to EVs.
  • The operational feasibility of electric-vehicles-as-a-service models (EVaaS) and reduced business risk of EVaaS leasing models.

The brief is written for:

  • Investors in the EV industry who are looking to implement electric vehicle as a service business models in South Africa.
  • Fleet managers exploring EVs as an option.
